Founded in 1992 and named in honor of the late philanthropist, the Vera List Center for Art and Politics embodies The New School’s historic commitment to the arts.
It is the site for public discourse on the role of the arts in society at large and on the relationship of the arts to the socio-political climate in which they are created. Positioned where scholarship develops into resource, policy, and civic engagement, the center calls on the university community, the people of New York, and national and international audiences.
The center organizes public events and forums, online programs, and occasional publications. It focuses on cultural production that emerges within and outside the traditional art world and seeks to intervene in contemporary political debates. Each year, it identifies a topic of particular urgency and broad resonance and in a variety of public programs convenes artists, scholars, activists, public intellectuals, and political and cultural leaders to examine this theme.
The first annual cycle, in 2004-05, was dedicated to different notions of “Homeland.” The annual theme for 2005-2006 addressed the implications of “Considering Forgiveness.” This year, many of the Vera List Center programs examine “The Public Domain.”
